# least squares analysis

## least squares analysis

A technique for statistical assessment of data that minimizes the sum of the squares of the distances from each data point to a line or plane. As part of the process, the slope, intercept, and correlation coefficient are also usually calculated. Once this is done, various statistical and analytical inferences can be made, so that the quality of the analytical process can be assessed.

Heritability in narrow sense (h2ns) was calculated using the components of variance from the best fit model of weighted least squares analysis.
On this basis, the least squares analysis led us to select a reduced number of significant factors for a better understanding of the global basic foundations of competitiveness linked with the main managerial functions.
To study the effect of species (cattle and buffalo), the period vis-a-vis the season of birth the data generated on male specific breeding soundness traits were subjected to least squares analysis. Seasons of birth were further divided into four categories: summer (May to July); rainy (August to October); winter (November to February) and spring (March to April).
Both of these models relate the residuals of period t to those of the previous periods to estimate a set of autoregressive parameters, whose coefficients were then used to perform the appropriate generalized least squares analysis (Freund & Littell 2003).
