laser in-sutu keratomileusis

laser in-sutu keratomileusis (LASIK)

A method of correcting refractive errors of the eye that uses an excimer laser to vaporize a thin layer of the centre of the cornea after a shallow flap of the outer surface has been raised by use of a microkeratome or a femtosecond laser. In correcting myopia (short sight) this procedure reduces the degree of curvature of the optical zone of the cornea so that its power as a lens is reduced and the image is formed further back in the plane of the retina.
