An upper motor neuron spastic paraparesis described in Africa and caused by cyanide poisoning, related to consumption of carbohydrate-rich cassava; in droughts, cassava produces more cyanogenic glycosides and, due to the food shortage, food manufacturers take short-cuts in the steps designed to remove the cyanide.
