KLK3

A gene on chromosome 19q13.41 that encodes a serine protease with diverse physiological functions, which may also have a role in carcinogenesis. KLK3 hydrolyses semenogelin-1, leading to the liquefaction of the seminal coagulum.

The risk of prostate cancer has been associated with single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) located in the genes coding for PSA (KLK3, kallikrein-related peptidase 3) (19-24) and hK2 (KLK2, kallikrein-related peptidase 2) (25-29).
PSA is encoded by KLK3 [8] (kallikrein-related peptidase 3), a member of a family of 15 kallikrein genes located on human chromosome 19 (4).

It is noteworthy that rs2735839 is located near the KLK3 [3] (kallikrein-related peptidase 3) gene on chromosome 19, which encodes PSA, potentially underlying the relationship.
