A genus of trees and shrubs found in Central and South America and in the West Indies. Constitutes the botanic source for pilocarpine (q.v.), an alkaloid that activates cholinergic muscarinic receptors. Sudorific; miotic.

1. Any of several tropical American shrubs of the genus Pilocarpus, especially P. microphyllus, whose dried leaves yield the medicinal alkaloid pilocarpine.
2. The dried leaves of any of these plants.
