The radical formed from a pentane, C5H12, by removal of one H. Several isomeric forms exist, the more important being CH3CH2CH2CH2CH2- (amyl or pentyl); (CH3)2CHCH2CH2- (isoamyl or isopentyl); CH3CH2CH2CH(CH)3- and (CH3CH2)2CH- (secondary amyl or pentyl); and CH3CH2C(CH3)2- (tertiary amyl or pentyl).

amyl nitrite  a volatile, flammable liquid with a pungent ethereal odor. It is administered by inhalation for the treatment of cyanide poisoning, producing methemoglobin which binds cyanide, and as a diagnostic aid in tests of reserve cardiac function and diagnosis of certain heart murmurs. It is abused to produce euphoria and as a sexual stimulant.
