a continuous band of mesoderm between the segmented paraxial mesoderm medially and the lateral plate mesoderm laterally; from it develops the nephrogenic cord.

intermediate mesoderm

Mesoderm lying between somite and lateral mesoderm, and giving rise to embryonic and definitive kidneys and their ducts.
