An optical device that acts on the interference of two beams of light, permitting examination of the structure of spectral lines. It is also used in examining prisms of lenses for faults.

1. Instrument designed to measure the wavelength of light, the refractive index of a medium, as well as the flatness, thickness, the quality of optical surfaces, etc. The interferometer is based on the phenomenon of interference between two coherent beams of light. 2. Name given to several types of clinical maxwellian view system used to measure visual acuity. See clinical maxwellian view system.
