independent sector

Government
A general term for non-statutory bodies (i.e., not created by legislative Acts) that are not part of local or central UK government, which are charged with providing health and social care services under an Act. The independent sector includes private—i.e., commercial—enterprise, and voluntary, charitable or not-for-profit organisations.

Medspeak-UK
A global term referring to all forms of medical practice in the UK which occur outside of the National Health Service.
