incompetent heart valve

incompetent heart valve

A valve that has been damaged by disease or congenital defect so that its cusps do not close completely and blood is able to pass in a direction contrary to the normal. This causes regurgitation and flow turbulence and imposes an abnormal load on the heart muscle of the affected chamber.
