ILK

A gene on chromosome 11p15.4 that encodes a receptor-proximal serine/threonine protein kinase which regulates integrin-mediated signal transduction, possibly by mediating so-called inside-out integrin signalling. ILK is the adhesion protein member of the ILK-PINCH complex, which is a convergence point of the integrin- and growth factor-signalling pathways; it may play a role in mediating cell architecture, adhesion to integrin substrates and anchorage-dependent growth in epithelial cells. It is highly expressed in the heart, and less so in the skeletal muscle, pancreas and kidneys.
