idiochromatinAn obsolete term for an extranuclear part of chromatin which earlier workers thought played a role in reproduction.
Idiochromatin is one of many terms coined in the “light microscopy” era, during which analysis of cellular components was based strictly on morphology, a technique now regarded as primitive. Subsequent immune and molecular analysis of a previously described intracellular structure showed that earlier conclusions as to its nature or function were incorrect.
