hypothalamic nucleus
A set of nuclei in the ventral diencephalon on either side of the lower recess of the third ventricle. These nuclei (a) regulate the preganglionic motor neurons of the sympathetic and parasympathetic nervous systems, (b) control the secretions of the anterior lobe of the pituitary gland, (c) secrete hormones (e.g., oxytocin and vasopressin) through the posterior lobe of the pituitary gland, and (d) modulate the limbic system (e.g., via the mammillary bodies).
