hypogeal(of seed GERMINATION) characterized by the COTYLEDONS (2) remaining underground within the seed coat as the epicotyl lengthens, with the young shoot and root growing out from the seed. The broad bean (Vicia faba), for example, is hypogeal. Compare EPIGEAL.
