A condition occurring in ♀, age 20-30, characterized by hyperplasia of the theca interna of a maturing ovarian follicle, often with hirsutism and amenorrhea. See Hirsutism.

DISCUSSION: Ovarian hyperthecosis or stromal hyperthecosis with HAIR--AN Syndrome is a rare disorder clinically similar to PCOS but with greater intensity of androgenisation and is associated with insulin resistance and type 2 diabetes.
The ovarian secretion of large amounts of androgens in women with hyperthecosis means that peripheral estrogen production is increased.
