Recent studies conducted in our laboratory confirmed the presence of the LIM-domain transcription factor Isl1 in differentiating and mature ganglion, amacrine, bipolar, and horizontal cells in the retina of mammals [54], birds [l8], reptiles [l2], and fish [9-ll].
However, it has been reported that Isl1 is also present in undifferentiated amacrine, bipolar and horizontal cells in the retina of vertebrates [9-12, 16, 17, 22, 23, 26].
Catfish contain two flavors of retinal horizontal cells: those that connect to cone cells, which respond to bright light, and those that connect to rod cells, which respond to dim light.

Under these conditions, a steady differential signal was obtained from horizontal cells indicative of a higher concentration of hydrogen ions near the membranes of the cells.
The cinchona alkaloid quinidine is a powerful antiarrhythmic agent that has been used to examine the properties of conductances in a variety of neuronal cell types, including retinal horizontal cells. This compound blocks sodium, potassium and calcium channel conductances in isolated skate horizontal cells (4).
Investigations of calcium flux from the retinal horizontal cells were conducted in a saline whose external calcium was reduced from 4 mM to 100 [Micro]M , greatly improving the signal-to-noise ratio.
