homeopathic remedy

Any of the nearly 2000 preparations of medicines used in homeopathy, which are made almost exclusively from three sources:
• Minerals—e.g., Cuprum metallicum (copper), aurum (gold), mercurium (mercury) or mineral salts (e.g., Kali carbonicum (potassium carbonate) and Natrum sulfuricum (sodium sulfate);
• Plants—e.g., Belladonna (deadly nightshade), Pulsatilla (wind flower), Rhus toxicodendron (poison ivy);
• Animals—e.g., Lac canensis (breast milk from dogs), Lachesis (venom from the bushmaster snake) and tarantulas.

Preparation
Homeopathic remedies are of three broad types: acute, chronic and constitutional, which are usually administered sublingually. The raw material is extracted, reduced in concentration (by a process known as potentisation), placed in a lactose base and compressed in a small pill. The concentrations are designated as X for a homeopathic remedy that is diluted one part in 10—commonly used concentrations are 6X (one part in 106), 30X (one part in 1030) and 200X (one part in 10200); in Europe, homeopathic remedies may be diluted one part in 100 and designated C, and the letter D may be used for concentrations of one part in 10. The remedies are dispensed, in order of decreasing size, as tablets, pillules, granules and powder.
