high energy bond

chemical bond which is readily hydrolysed by an appropriate catalyst, and releases a large amount of energy when the hydrolysis occurs in the cytoplasm of a living cell; this energy release depends as much on the products of the hydrolysis being present at very low concentrations as it does on the properties of the bond itself. Key instances in muscle are the terminal phosphate bonds of adenosine triphosphate and phosphocreatine.
