hemodialyzer

 [he″mo-di´ah-līz″er]
an apparatus by which hemodialysis may be performed; blood is brought in contact with a semipermeable membrane on whose other side is a dialysate solution of such composition as to secure diffusion of certain elements out of the blood. Popularly called artificial kidney.

A machine for hemodialysis in acute or chronic renal failure; toxic substances in the blood are removed by exposure of blood to dialyzing fluid (dialysate) across a semipermeable membrane.
Synonym(s): artificial kidney

We believe these hearing losses were probably caused by contamination of the blood by the degraded product of an old cellulose acetate hemodialyzer membrane.
I was certain during my 15 years of nephrology nursing practice I had never been afforded the opportunity to talk to manufacturers, researchers, engineers, or the medical profession about the design of a hemodialyzer. We have come a long way from coil dialyzers that exploded when clotted or flat plate dialyzers that were prone to blood leaks, but the dialyzer still has room for improvement.
The dialysate conductivity is then measured at the hemodialyzer outlet, allowing a mathematical model in the machine to compute several parameters, including ionic Kt/V (Gambro Lundia AB, 2004).
Cannulation is as basic to hemodialysis as the hemodialyzer, but is much less understood.

If a hollow-fiber dialyzer is to be reused, the total cell volume (TCV) of that hemodialyzer should be measured prior to its first use.
