heart failure cell

Any of the innumerable intra-alveolar, haemosiderin-laden macrophages in the lungs of patients with compromised cardiac function resulting in low-grade pulmonary haemorrhage (e.g., congestive heart failure). The ferrous content of heart failure cells is confirmed by an iron stain (e.g., Prussian blue).
