hand-o·ver-mouth ex·er·cise (H.O.M.E.)

(hand ō'vĕr mowth eks'ĕr-sīz)
Patient-management technique for pedodontic dental patients where the dentist gently places his or her hand over the child's mouth and tells child that the hand will be removed as soon as the child is quiet and can listen without being loud and disruptive. This method can only be employed by the dentist, not by dental auxiliaries, and must never include obstructing the nasal airway, which is illegal.
