gymnosperm
any member of the class Gymnospermae - the CONIFERS and their allies. Gymnosperms derive their name from the fact that the ovules are borne without a covering on the surface of the megasporophylls, which usually take the form of cones.Collins Dictionary of Biology, 3rd ed. © W.
