gold alloy

An alloy of gold with copper, silver, platinum, or other metals added for strength or hardness. Pure gold is rated 24 carats. A gold alloy that contains other metals is less than 24 carats. Thus, 18 parts of gold mixed with 6 parts of another metal would be rated as 18-carat gold.
