Before the introduction of benzodiazepines, anxiety disorders were treated either with the barbiturates or related drugs such as meprobomate and
glutethimide. These agents were highly likely to be abused and led to a great deal of dependence.
Nonbenzodiazepines studied included zopiclone, diphenhydramine,
glutethimide, and promethazine.
