gel fil·tra·tion

separation of molecular sizes by passage of a mixture through columns of beads of cross-linked dextrans or similar relatively inert material of a well-defined pore size range; the larger the molecule, the less time it spends in the interior of the beads, thus emerging earlier from the column than smaller molecules.

To assess whether ELISA can specifically detect naturally occurring sLR11, each fraction of human serum and CSF was analyzed for sLR11, following to separation by gel filtration chromatography; the results were then compared with the immunologically purified sLR11 protein as a quantitative calibrator.
Del Monte banana lectin (DBL) appeared as a single 30-kDa peak in gel filtration (data not shown) and a 15-kDa band in SDS-PAGE (Fig.

We found the following evidence for the IgGIgM-vitamin [B.sub.12] complex: (a) an abnormal distribution of vitamin B1, -binding proteins in the serum from the patient, indicated by the results of 2 types of gel filtration chromatography; (b) high concentrations of vitamin [B.sub.12] in protein G--and protamine-sepharose eluates from the patient, but not from healthy controls or other patients receiving vitamin [B.sub.12]; (c) pentameric IgM in the protein G eluate from the patient, but not the controls, identified by SDS-PAGE and MALDI-TOF MS; and (d) detection of IgG associated with the protein bound to an anti-[mu]-chain primary antibody in an ELISA.
