The rooftop 'sail', extending some 30m above the 44th floor, waves symbolically to the opera house and the world; the cantilevered fins at either end of the building provide vertical, wind-protected slots within which Piano's wintergardens give real-air breathing space to each floor; and the smooth-bellied facade itself, fritted
with baked-on ceramic dots at various scales, provides a semi-opaque ghosty-look from without, transparency from within.
An extremely precise vertical facade of white fritted
glass automatically alters as the sun moves round, with sender louvres rising to act as glittering, emerald-edged solar shading, then fluttering back flush and crisp when the elevation falls into shadow (the white fritted
glass is an outer screen; behind is a more conventional double-glazed wall with opening windows).
The drama is increased by a special silicone-jointed curtain wall in continuous glass, fritted
around the openings, the white ceramic coating on its back face gaining a greenish tinge in contrast with the pure white enamelled steel panels elsewhere.
The inner one has a pattern of ceramic bars fritted
on to it, their spacing finely calculated so that the whole plane acts as an effective solar screen reducing the amount of solar energy entering the building to less than 37 per cent.
On the south and north elevations, inclined acoustic glazing is shaded externally at each level by projecting banks of fritted
glass louvres - the principle being that of a wide-brimmed hat.
So the glass is fritted
to prevent excessive heat from the sun.
