foreign bodies in throat

The presence of foreign objects in the pharynx or throat. Symptoms depend on the location and size of the foreign body and vary from simple discomfort to severe coughing and difficulty in breathing. If the airway is obstructed, suffocation occurs, resulting in unconsciousness and death.

First Aid

If complete airway obstruction is present, as evidenced by an inability to speak, breathe, or cough, the Heimlich maneuver should be performed. See: Heimlich maneuver under Heimlich, Henry Jay
