an opening in the base of the greater wing of the sphenoid bone, anterior to the spine of the sphenoid, transmitting the middle meningeal artery, and the meningeal branch (nervus spinosum) of the mandibular nerve.

foramen spinosum

The hole in the outer edge of the greater wing of the sphenoid bone through which the middle meningeal artery passes as it enters the middle cranial fossa. It is just lateral to the foramen ovale.
