foot and mouth disease
A viral disease of cattle and horses that is rarely transmitted to humans. Because of a similarity in name, it is occasionally confused with hand-foot-and-mouth disease, a common viral infection of children.
Symptoms
In humans, symptoms include fever, headache, and malaise with dryness and burning sensation of the mouth. Vesicles develop on the lips, tongue, mouth, palms, and soles.
Treatment
Therapy is symptomatic. Full recovery occurs in 2 to 3 weeks. Several preventive vaccines are available.
