fibroblast growth factors

A family of peptide regulators produced by virtually all cells. Their range of actions is wide. Only some are stimulators of the collagen-producing cells, the fibroblasts. Other effects include strong stimulation of vascular endothelial cell proliferation. Some are produced in relatively large quantities by brain tumours. Hope for people paralysed by spinal cord injuries has been raised by the discovery that a measure of rejoining in severed spinal cord tracts in rats can be achieved using a fibrin ‘glue’ containing a fibroblast growth factor. A mutation in the gene for a fibroblast growth factor receptor can cause CRANIOSYOSTOSIS.
