fibrate

(fī-brāt),
An alternate term for fibric acid derivatives used to treat hyperlipidemia.

fibrate

(fi'brat?)
Any of a class of carboxylic acid compounds commonly used as lipid-lowering medications, including gemfibrozil and fenofibrate, that primarily reduce levels of triglycerides. Medications of this class have a minor impact on low-density and high-density lipoprotein cholesterol.
Synonym: fibric acid derivative

fibrate

One of a class of drugs capable of lowering the levels in the body of lipids (fats) including cholesterol. Fibrates can reduce low-density lipoproteins and raise high density lipoproteins. Some act by interfering with cholesterol synthesis in the liver others by promoting the more rapid breakdown of lipoproteins.
