In reviewing the history, it is worth to mention in this article that in the 1960s and 70s, the more potent short-acting beta-2 agonists were isoproterenol and fenoterol which were found to be associated with high asthmatic mortality.
Beta2-adrenoceptor agonist fenoterol enhances functional repair of regenerating rat skeletal muscle after injury.
The short-acting beta-2 agonists, including salbutamol and fenoterol, have a rapid onset of action, i.e., bronchodilating effect for 3-6 hours.
The most commonly used SABAs are fenoterol, levalbuterol, salbutamol, and terbutaline.
Slovenian ice hockey player Ziga Jeglic has also tested positive for fenoterol and left the Games.
Jeglic, 29, who plays professional ice hockey in Russia, tested positive for fenoterol, a banned substance used to treat breathing difficulties, and was given 24 hours to quit the Olympic Village.
was designed to compare the effects of jet nebulization during spontaneous breathing and aerosol therapy (2.5 mg of fenoterol bromide rate, 0.25 mg of ipratropium bromide, and 4mL of saline solution) administered during NIV in patients with AAE and FEV1 <60% of the predicted value, who were treated for acute asthmatic episode in the ER.
After the diagnosis was made, all patients were tested for concentrations of the analyzed markers, after which they were treated according to a single tocolytic procedure with the use of intravenous fenoterol infusion 0.05 mg/hour during 48 hours along with glucocorticosteroid therapy (2 doses of betamethasone 12 mg every 24 hours).
[6] Use of beta 2adrenoceptor agonists like fenoterol or salbutamol may also contribute to hypokalaemia in COPD patients.
