An accumulation of somewhat encapsulated adipose tissue.

fat body

  1. (in amphibians and lizards) a structure in the form of finger-like growths immediately in front of the gonads. The fat body stores fat as ADIPOSE TISSUE and is largest just before hibernation. It is of special importance in males where little or no food is taken in the breeding season, after which it is greatly reduced in size.
  2. (in insects) a loose network of tissue in spaces between organs and around the gut, storing fat, proteins, glycogen and uric acid. It is found especially in juvenile insects before METAMORPHOSIS.
