Prof Alan Silman, medical director of Arthritis Research UK, said: "There's a real need to do in-depth testing of the benefits and safety of new drugs in small numbers of patients before large scale trials can begin, and our new
experimental arthritis treatment centres will provide the resources to study patients in these key first stage studies."
Two days after the CFA injection the
experimental arthritis manifestations were observed.
Since LTs are important inflammatory mediators in gouty arthritis (15 Rae) and drugs such as montelukast (Mk) act as a competitive inhibitor of LTs by joining selectively to LT receptors (16), especially to the LTD4 receptor, we sought to investigate the effect of montelukast in a model of
experimental arthritis induced by SMU crystals deposits in the air pouch model in BALB/c mice (17).
Pozen has already completed two studies of its
experimental arthritis drug PN 400 that showed reduction of ulcers.
The authors concluded: "hCG exerts a protective effect in this
experimental arthritis model, through modulation of inflammatory mediators."
"The observed inverse association between alcohol intake and the risk of RA and the recent demonstration of a preventive effect of alcohol in
experimental arthritis, indicate alcohol may protect against RA.
For the past 12 years, the National Institutes of Health (NIH) has funded a unique nationwide network of research clinics dedicated to testing lesser-known and more
experimental arthritis drugs.
Animal Models of
Experimental Arthritis and Th17 Cells
Several reports show a reduced amount of apoptosis in the synovial fibroblasts during RA both in vivo (using an
experimental arthritis animal model and RA patients [19]) and in vitro (using cultured RASFs [20-22]).
Although an ameliorating effect of Sinomenium acutum, a main ingredient of TJ-20 (Table 1), has been reported in rat
experimental arthritis and in the treatment of rheumatic diseases [20, 21], the immunological aspect of the effect of TJ-20 in RA is still unclear.
