exercise pyramid

exercise pyramid

A proposed schematic for exercise that recommends the amount and types of exercise that should be performed for optimal health, modelled after the USDA’s food pyramid. At the bottom are nonstructured physical activities (e.g., walking the dog, gardening, climbing stairs); higher on the pyramid are active recreational activities (e.g., basketball, swimming, tennis and others); at the peak of the exercise pyramid is vigorous exercise, which is recommended at least three times/week for at least 30 minutes each session.

With more and more information being released about the appropriate amounts and levels of exercise for optimal fitness, the National Exercise for Life Institute (NEFLI) has developed an exercise pyramid. Similar to the widely used food pyramid, it provides recommended amounts and benefits of the different types of exercise activity, as well as guidance for undertaking any workout program.
The key is to work your way up gradually, level by level, the exercise pyramid. It is the most efficient and beneficial way of improving your fitness and enhancing your quality of life.
