enchondromaA benign intramedullary tumour of hyaline cartilage that forms tumours in the medulla of metaphyseal bone and measures up to 5 cm, which accounts for 10% of all benign bone tumours. Half occur in the tubular bones of the hands/feet, especially fingers and toes.
Most enchondromas of long bones (e.g., femur) are incidental findings in younger patients (age 15–40). Phalangeal enchodromas may predispose to fractures.
