Emergency Services Action Team (ESAT), said: "We were seeing slight pressure at Aintree due mainly to respiratory diseases but that has now eased.

Emergency Services Action Team spokeswoman Jean Scott said: "The patients caught in the back-log at Aintree were all emergency cases, but we do find that there are people using emergency services when there are other options.

emergency services action team, set up to monitor hospital capacity, GP services and social services over the winter, said: "We did pay for some private operations last year but it is happening to a much greater extent this winter because of the very tight in-patient waiting list targets hospitals have to meet.
