a pain in the ear, sensed as sharp, dull, burning, intermittent, or constant. The cause is not necessarily a disease of the ear, because infections and other disorders of the nose, oral cavity, larynx, and temporomandibular joint can produce referred pain in the ear. Also called otalgia, otodynia.

Pain arising from the external ear passage, the ear drum, the space between the drum and the inner ear (the middle ear) or the inner ear apparatus lying within the temporal bone of the skull. The common cause is infection, usually OTITIS EXTERNA or OTITIS MEDIA. Earache can also occur from BAROTRAUMA.
