Other than for the dedicated amateur and professional naturalist, sightings of most of the canine, feline and other species, such as the delightful Rock Hyrax and Dorcas Gazelle
, illustrated in Egypt's Flora and Fauna are very rare.
We started in the crumbling sandstone heights of the Ennedi Mountains, hunting aoudad, and we hunted Dorcas gazelle
in the huge sand wadis that once held great numbers of addax and scimitar oryx.
Bahrain, Kuwait, Oman, Qatar, the UAE, Yemen, Saudi Arabia, and parts of Syria, Jordan and Iraq are such pockets of the Arabian Peninsula from where animals such as the Syrian wild ass, the Arabian ostrich and the Arabian Dorcas Gazelle
have become extinct today.
Now brave Bonita, the first Dorcas Gazelle
to be born in Britain, is set to make a full recovery and should be walking unaided in six weeks.
The big antelope were gone, but this area still held Dorcas gazelle

In this area, where we received few answers to the questionnaire from Naama and El Bayadh governorates, and none from Laghouat, there could be a recent extirpation by hunters and/or misidentification of dorcas gazelles
(Gazella dorcas), a species reported there by Fellous (2013).
