A splitting of the wall of the largest artery in the body, into which blood can pass under pressure. The split tends to extend and the artery may rupture causing immediate death. The condition may occur in people with severe ATHEROSCLEROSIS and high blood pressure (HYPERTENSION) or with MARFAN'S SYNDROME.
