deterrent(dē-tĕr′ĕnt) [L. deterrēre, to deter]
1. An agent that inhibits the action of another agent.
2. An agent that discourages or prevents the use of another agent.
Any agent, such as nicotine, nicotine antagonists, or some antidepressant drugs, that relieves the desire to smoke tobacco products.
