DSG4

A gene on chromosome 18q12.1 that encodes desmoglein 4, a component of intercellular desmosomes that mediates cell–cell adhesion. DSG4 co-ordinates the transition from proliferation to differentiation in hair follicle keratinocytes.

Molecular pathology
Defects in DSG4 cause hypotrichosis type 6; like desmoglein 3, desmoglein 4 is an antigen targeted in the autoimmune blistering disease pemphigus vulgaris.

[5] A variant of monilethrix with scalp erosions and the appearance of congenital alopecia is attributed to a mutation in the gene for desmoglein 4, which can be recessively inherited.
Blisters occur in the epidermis and the mucous membranes, where the IgG autoantibodies target two structural proteins of the desmosomes identified as desmoglein 1 (Dsg1) and desmoglein 3 (Dsg3).A new pemphigus antigen, desmoglein 4, has recently been discovered and implicated in the pathogenesis of PV.
