Somos Independents (SI) believes pro life members who are Latino / Hispanic / Chicano should withdraw their support from pro life organizations who do very little to push back on Republican politicians who use
dehumanizing terms towards human beings and babies.
One of the most interesting aspects of these essays is the way in which they show how both
dehumanizing and rehumanizing tendencies are linked in a complex and often contradictory manner to the critique of capitalism in both its nineteenth- and twentieth-century forms.
Being denied all the elements that hegemony deemed essential to manhood was a traumatic,
dehumanizing experience for black men: hence, Orlando Patterson's characterization of their experience of slavery as "social death." (4) They could own no property, nor impose their will on any aspect of external reality, not even their own bodies; they were totally unmanned.

Gross' essay on "The Postures of Allegory" builds similarly from Spenser's personification of Envie in the pageant of the Seven Deadly Sins to a larger consideration of allegory's paradoxical identity as a "mode of both purification and contamination, caught between idealism and illusion, given to posing as both a veiling and an unveiling, both humanizing and
dehumanizing" (171).
Cloning is tyrannical and
dehumanizing. We should have none of it.

May I suggest that the siege is in the minds of American officials and apologists for Israel who willfully persist in blaming the victim, in finding a false symmetry between occupier and occupied, in adopting a double standard on the value of human lives and rights while totally
dehumanizing the Palestinians, in treating Israel as a country above the law and Palestinians as a people not worthy of the protection of the law, in manipulating and inventing a peace process that would accommodate such a racist and stereotypical version of reality rather than a reality of justice and evenhandedness, and in evading and distorting moral responsibility toward the Palestinian victims rather than celebrating the violence of the oppressor.
This fails to recognize that fetuses are completely dependent on a woman's body to survive and that the fetal mode of growth and survival fits the technical definition of parasite--notwithstanding Cunningham's opinion of that word as a
dehumanizing slur.
One may observe that our own century has seen the most terrible consequences of the potential for
dehumanizing other human beings; this does not make chattel slavery and the other past forms of involuntary servitude right because "we do it too" if in another way, but this certainly is a black fact about humanity that needs always to be remembered.
Anderson does deserve credit for pointing out the basic inhumanity of those policies, and through anecdotes he tries to combat the
dehumanizing of criminals that allows the present treatment.
