A term of art referring to the morphologic changes of the colonic mucosa seen by light microscopy, which consist of superficial crypt dilation with deep crypt degeneration (”withering”) and numerous neutrophils accompanied by mucin depletion, as well as flattened crypt epithelium, a finding classically seen in enterohaemorrhagic E coli infection, other infective colitides and ischaemia.
