Either a serving police officer permanently seconded to the Coroner's office in the UK to undertake the day-to-day routine of investigation of deaths reported to the Coroner or, more commonly, a civilian appointed for the same purpose.

Compiling reports in respect of each sudden death, or compiling reports provided by uniformed police officers and other witnesses.
