Bark is not wood but results from the activities of two lateral meristems: the vascular cambium, which produces phloem toward the outside, and the phellogen or cork cambium, which produces the cork and inner parenchymatous layer called phelloderm.
As the tree ages, more layers of cork cambium emerge and begin generating additional outer bark cells.
As the bark develops, it differentiates into inner and outer bark, and a fresh layer of cells, the cork cambium, is formed between the inner and outer bark.
