Airway was maintained with endotracheal tube and mechanical ventilation was continued on continuous mandatory ventilation (CMV) mode.
The first measurement was performed under continuous mandatory ventilation (CMV), the second during pressure support ventilation (PSV; allowing spontaneous breathing activities) and the last after endotracheal extubation (SPONT) of the spontaneously breathing patients without any respiratory support.
We excluded patients due for extubation on the same day, patients with unstable haemodynamic parameters (labile BP or pulse rate or escalating vasopressor or inotrope requirements), those requiring mandatory ventilation (such as continuous mandatory ventilation) or those receiving inhaled nitric oxide.
