avitaminosis caused by any number of pathologic states or dysfunctions in which the supply of a vitamin absorbed by the body is inadequate for the needs under particular circumstances; for example, the reduced bacterial synthesis of the vitamins in the alimentary canal produced by antibiotic agents.
