cloud baby

cloud baby

Etymology: AS, clud + babe
an obsolete term for a newborn who appears well and healthy but is a carrier of infectious bacterial or viral organisms. The infant may contaminate the surrounding environment as airborne droplets from the respiratory tract form clouds of the organisms. A cloud baby may be the source of a nursery epidemic, especially one caused by a staphylococcal organism.
A popular term for an infant with an infection that spreads by aerosol, who releases ‘clouds’ of viral or bacteria-rich material into the ambient air and is a vector for mini-epidemics of upper respiratory tract infections
