Most common morphologic type noted was clinically aggressive intermediate grade diffuse small
cleaved cell type.
Other histological patterns have been described as small cell lymphocytic, diffuse small
cleaved cell, large cell immunoblastic and polymorphous types.121 Low grade B-cell mucosa-associated lymphoid tissue lymphoma of the prostate has also been reported (6) Our patient had a low-intermediate grade non-Hodgkin follicular lymphoma.
Expression of p53 protein is significantly increased in follicular large cell lymphoma (grade 3) compared with follicular small cleaved cell lymphoma (grade 1) in adults.
As in adults, pediatric FLs contain both small cleaved cells (centrocytes) and large cells (centroblasts) in varying proportions (Figure 3).
Fortunately, the incidence is much less for large cell than for small
cleaved cell lymphoma.
small lymphocytic, consistent with CLL (SL) follicular, predominantly small
cleaved cell (FSC) follicular, mixed small cleaved and large cell (FM)
Subsequently, in 1992, Miettinen[24] described [CD30.sup.+] cells in 51% of nodular small
cleaved cell lymphomas studied.
Diffuse, large noncleaved cell lymphoma is the most common subtype, followed by large cell immunoblastic and large
cleaved cell types.[12,14-16] Only rare cases of follicular lymphoma or diffuse lymphoma with follicular areas have been described.[15,17] This observation is somewhat surprising, since follicular lymphoma is one of the most common NHL in adults.
We report the unusual case of a 73-year-old man with follicular small
cleaved cell lymphoma involving a right groin lymph node 13 years before present admission who had a composite lymphoma, with a combination of nodular sclerosing Hodgkin disease (HD) and follicular small
cleaved cell lymphoma.
The
cleaved cells were boiled for 10min at 100degC, and then centrifuged at 12000rpm (13314xg) for 10min.
The neoplastic cells vary from small to large, showing folding and cleaving of the nuclei, resembling centrocytes (small- to medium-sized
cleaved cells with inconspicuous nucleoli) and centroblasts (large noncleaved cells with vesicular chromatin and several peripheral nucleoli).
The follicles were composed of predominantly small
cleaved cells. By immunohistochemical stain, the cells were immunoreactive for CD20, BCL-2, and both CD5 and CD10 (Figure 2).
